Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become starving," recalled a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
