No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
