Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the ability to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
